| Why these things keep happening to your PC: |
| |
- Running slower and slower and slower
Windows PC's will run slower the more you use them. This is caused by Microsoft's file systems (FAT, FAT32, NTFS, etc) which are inherently inefficient. The more you create, modify, and/or delete files (documents, photos, spreadsheets, etc) the worse the problem gets. Pieces of your files are scattered throughout your hard disk. This makes their future access by Windows itself more difficult and therefore slower. Additionally, computer security programs such as firewalls and anti-virus are know to degrade performance. These design flaws do not occur on Linux, Unix and Mac based systems.
- Infected with Viruses, SpyWare, Adware
Windows PC's are extremely vulnerable to malware due to the proprietary nature of Microsoft's products. By not sharing their source code, Microsoft has sporned an entire industry: virus protection and removal. Throughout the world, hackers relentlessly exploit vulnerabilities within Microsoft's products. Viruses, spyware and adware often enter via email, chat, and visited websites. How do these hackers get in? They exploit know weaknesses within Microsoft's products. The latest estimates claim there are currently over one million viruses in circulation with 10,000 being created daily. This is amazing considering that two years ago, this number was around 120,000. Of these astounding numbers, over 99.9% of these viruses are specific to the Windows platform. Special anti-virus software should be run to protect against, detect and remove these threats. Linux, Unix and Macs are virtually unaffected.
- Unsecure to Hack-ins and Intrusions
Windows PC's, in their native state, are virtually unprotected from hackers. Hackers gain access to your PC through computer programs, known as services, which are constantly running on Windows systems. These services allow your computer to enter into communication with external computers. Microsoft itself uses these communication services in order to check your PC for illegal copies of their software. It is via this mechanism that not only viruses, spyware and adware can be injected into your computer, but your computer can also be probed for sensitive data and/or remotely controlled. Once again, these design flaws are inherent to the Microsoft family of products and are natively absent on Linux, Unix and Macs.
- Unstable with programs that just stop working
Windows PC programs become unstable due to their need for constant updates and patches. As stated prior, since Microsoft products are proprietary, independent software vendors are often out-of-sync with the latest updates and patches to the Windows operating system. As a result, programs, particularly those dependant upon low-level operating system functions, can suddenly become unstable or cease to function altogether. Once this occurs, you are either forced to stop using the program, update or upgrade it, or replace it with a comparable Microsoft product. Given these choices, we are often forced into expensive upgrades or purchases of software. These forced upgrades/purchases are totally unknown on Linux.
- Suffering from "Blue Screen of Death"
Windows PC's are prone to cumulative damage which is caused by their vulnerability to viruses and hacking, along with their dependance upon constant software updates and patches. The more you use your system or add new programs, the worse this situation gets. If corrective action is not taken, this situation can ultimately result in a "Blue Screen of Death" (pictured at the right). This unfortunately not too rare phenomenon, can and will occur randomly. At that point, your Windows system will stop functioning, the graphical interface will disappear, a blue screen noting an error message will momentarily flash, and your PC will reboot. If you have gotten to this point, it may be too late to fix the underlying causes. Your only solution may be to delete the entire contents of you hard disk and reinstall the Microsoft Windows operating system, all your programs and all your backed-up data. Recovering from one such occurences can literally take days. Situations like these never occur on Linux, Unix of Mac systems.
- Constantly in need of Maintenance
Windows based PC's should be thought of as low quality automobiles -- they need plenty of preventive and ongoing maintenance to run effectively. Just like the low quality automobile, the Microsoft based PC is not based on a stable and reliable platform. And just like we tend to ignore the little pings and clangs in our car, we have come to accept a certain degree of instability and inconvenience in the name of the computer usage which has become an intregal part of our daily lives. Yet left untreated, these warning signs will ultimately lead to more expenses and inconveniences later on. Maintenance must be performed. How often and to what degree can only be determined by your computer usage habits, your installed programs and all the aforementioned problems. Needless to say, this frequency and type of maintenance is totally unnecessary on Linux, Unix and Mac computers.
- Costing you money for Licenses and Upgrades
Windows and Microsoft based software is constantly changing. As the operating system changes, it forces modifications to your programs. These changes are implemented as a continual stream of updates and patches. Once the degree of updates/patches becomes overwhelming, software vendors will introduce a new version of the affected product. Usually, the new product address the original problems which caused the need for the patches. Additionally, new features may be added. Regardless, in the Microsoft world, you will eventually need to pay for these newly improved programs. Sometimes, you are forced to purchase these upgrades because the supplying vendor has decided to stop supporting your version of some software. This never occurs with Linux.
